Identity Studies In College English Culture Teaching

Identity is an important part of every interaction, and it is a complex construct. We will become better informed about human interaction, especially the process of intercultural communication if we know more about relevant knowledge of identity, such as the definitions, kinds, levels, dimensions, and establishment of it. The intercultural identity competence refers to people's ability to fulfill the task of negotiating mutually satisfactory identities in intercultural communication. It is one of those competences which modern people should master to face up to the challenge of today's culturally diverse world.In college English class, first of all, teachers should include culture teaching in their teaching objectives. Then they should realize that they should not only pass on factual knowledge about culture, but also cultivate students'intercultural identity competence. Only in this way can they set up their identities as transmitters of culture.Students need to be intercultural to fit in their identities as citizens of the global village. If they develop the intercultural identity competence, they can have some competitive advantages in their future workplaces. Students should realize that they are not learning to pass a test but to prepare themselves for the future, so they should attach more importance to the culture learning. School authorities play an important role in modifying the identities of teachers and students. They can provide more opportunities for teachers and students to improve themselves in the culture teaching and learning process.
