Lv Tiancheng's QuPin is the first theory monograph which commented opera writers and works by critical form in the historical development of Chinese opera theory. It appraised 97 opera writers, 25 non-dramatic songs writers as well as 227 works. This article is for the purpose of explaining comprehensively the opera theory of Lv Tiancheng. The article is divided into four parts:First, introduction. It is mainly about pointing out the status of QuPin in the history of Chinese opera theory and summarizing predecessor scholars' study results on it. Then, it explains the selected origin, the significance and the feasibility of this article.Second, Lv Tiancheng and QuPin. It elaborates Lv Tiancheng's biography, his creation situation and the writing time, the scale as well as the appraisal standard of QuPin.Third, the opera creation theory. It discusses mainly Lv Tiancheng's creation position, such as the opera plot theory, the opera structure theory, the opera character theory and so on. Specifically contains: new and wonder plot; fictional and real plot; Lv Tiancheng's esthetics request which was proposed about the overall characteristic of the opera structure—rigorous structure; the specific request about the opera structure—numerous and simple art process; the theory position about processing the . rhythm of the opera structure—sadness and happiness. Finally, it elaborates briefly the creation method of Lv Tiancheng about the opera characterization.Fourth, the opera commentary theory. This part summarizes Lv Tiancheng's opera esthetic critical principle, such as simplicity and popularity, classical Chinese poetry rules and exquisite language, the ideal boundary and interest, the function and primary intention. Then, it elaborates Lv Tiancheng's viewpoints which were proposed in the view of these questions, and its profound influence which produces to the later generation.
