The purpose of humor tends to bring fun to people. But the truth is that much humor does not work as the way it should. In particular when the humor is created deliberately in some movies, the result appears surprisingly awkward, making the audience uncomfortable. As a movie fan who is a linguistic student, the writer proposes the pragmalinguistic approach the quality of humor in movies.From a pragmalinguistic perspective, the present thesis analyzes the successful humor in movies, which aims to summarize the ways of humor creating in movies from the audience's stance. By the pragmalinguistic perspective, the writer means to investigate humor in its practical situation on the basis of relevant linguistic theories and principles, emphasizing the humor exchanging between the participants. Meanwhile, the thesis also seeks to identify the underlying reasons of the ineffective humor in movies in hope of making some possible suggestions to filmmakers.The thesis attempts to find answers to the following two questions:1. What is the good humor?2. How is humor created in movies?Through the investigation of the scenes taken from the selected movies, the writer comes to the following conclusions:1. Relevance is the guarantee for the successful production and realization of humor.2. The incongruity hidden in relevance is an indispensable element of humor creating in movies.
