English is one of the languages with a rich vocabulary in the world, and English idioms are rather complicated and intricate. They contain strong western cultural traits. As a foreign language learner, whether to understand English idioms and use them correctly or not directly reflects the learner's language level. However, cultural provenance, grammatical usages and flexible application (varieties) of English idioms are the three main factors that influence learners to understand and use idioms appropriately. For the Chinese learners who take English as a foreign language, ECLDs are not only the main sources of relative information of English vocabulary, but also the significant tools that include the indispensable information of English idioms. The present study, from the perspective of the three factors that constrain learners to understand and use idioms properly, elaborates on the relationship between the three aspects and English idioms, and briefly introduces the definition, features, scope and types of idioms so that learners can get a full knowledge of idioms. As most of the previous research of English idioms only focuses on the level of pure theory, it leads to the severe gap between the theoretic study of idioms and the appropriate treatment of idioms in ECLDs. To fill up the gap, the present study, giving a detail contrast and analysis of the treatment of idioms in the current four ECLDs, points out the drawbacks in them , and puts forward the tentative models for the inclusion of the above three kinds of information in ECLDs and the principles for the inclusion of the indispensable information of idioms.
