American Missionary Situation At Yantai

A beautiful littoral city named Yantai lies in the east of Jiaodong peninsula.Since the traffic became convenient in modem times, Yantai became a bridgehead for theentrance of capitalist countries to China. The spread of Christianity in China connectsintimately with the aggression history of western countries, especially after the commercialopen of Yantai. Western countries came to China one after another, accompanied not onlyordnance, armada, but also missioners. Among the missioners, Americans did the best in thespreading of Christianity. They intent to turn China into an Christian country, by doing this,the colonialism show an trace of idealism. But for some reasons, many missioners executedthe realism policies which American government made, just like ambassadors did. It has beenproved that the research of American missionary situation in China is the cardinal way to thestudy of China-America relationship. This article is about the development of Americanmissionary situation at Yantai city. The aim is to describe correctly and systematically theactivities American missioners have done at Yantai since the 19th century, to analyze theirpurpose and purport, and the influence to modem China. Although itexists unavoidable conflict between the civilization of western Christianity and tong history ofChinese civilization, it gives the contribution to the construction of Chinese civilization.
