Lin Yutang is a renowned Chinese writer and translator, however, studies on his translation are far from being sufficient compared with studies on other translators. The main focus of study on his translation theory is his concept of "aesthetic quality" in recent years. Lin Yutang is the first one to bring the theory of aesthetics to the field of translation in Chinese translation history, which exerts great influence on Chinese translation. He devoted his whole life to the cultural exchange between the East and the West, making especially great contributions to the spreading of Chinese culture to the world and to translation studies. His contributions are permanent and his art of translation is worth appreciating and learning. However, "aesthetic quality" of translation is just one aspect in Lin's translation theory and practice. This thesis attempts to study Lin Yutang's as whole—a writer and translator, to study his translation under the context of "cultural turn". Lin made great achievements in writing, linguistics and cultural exchanges between China and the West, which inevitably exert a subtle influence on his translation theory and practice. The research makes a thorough study of Lin's life experience, cultural attitude, aesthetic attitude and translation, finding Lin's translation theory and practice can be more fully and deeply embraced by cultural poetics.Translation and poetics are closely related. Cultural poetics of translation comes into being under the "cultural turn", and views translation as an interdisciplinary activity from the perspective of culture and provides a new angle for the study of translation theory. The research studies poetics, cultural poetics, Lin's On Translation, and a careful analysis on his successful translation of culture-specific words and certain cultural images in his translation work Six Chapters of a Floating Life, verifying the idea of cultural poetics reflected in Lin's translation theory and practice.
