This thesis mainly deals with the styles of popular music in theworld and the history of development of Chinese popular music style andtries to make a study and analysis into the typical melodies for voices andsinging methods. Why should we find out the styles of popular music?Style is a unique characteristic of an artist who moulds and manifests hisworks of art in bright gay color. And all of the musical styles are deeplyengraved by the times. The period a composer lives in, his lifeexperiences, his education background and his national characters allhave an inestimable influence upon the formation of musical styles. Theteaching orientation of popular music is a basic problem of this subject. Itcannot be developed well if it is not clear. Therefore, it is necessary for usto make a probe into popular music combined with history.Why should we study singing methods? It is the inevitable outcomeof music arts' historical development and it is also a process fromhuman's spontaneous cognition to conscious cognition. It is a majorcharacteristic that singing plays an important role in the field of popularmusic. Western singing methods are comparatively advanced. Anothercharacteristic of its development is that it can reveal the essence of worksfully, which is embodied in singer's treatment to songs and adaptability todifferent forms and types of songs. In term of singing methods, Chinesemodern vocal music can be roughly classified into three kinds: folkmethods, bell canto and popular methods. We try to make a probe into thesinging methods of popular songs, aiming at fully bringing out latentpotentialities of voices and improving singing techniques. A scientificsinging method is the primary condition of voice protection. We want totrain better personnel in music to extend our ideas of teaching andresearch.
