Funeral oration, for the funeral, for the dead, is an applied literarystyle. The excellent funeral orations, which have emotion strength andartistic charm, are filled with grief, and they are rare lyric works. This kind of works express the cockles of the anthors' heart trulythoroughly, which is one of the point to study the authors and their works. The thesis is intended to conduct a comprehensive study on the outstandingwriters——Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan, by unscrambling their funeralorations.First, I introduces the formation and evolution of funeral oration, and defines "the funeral oration" in the thesis. Funeral oration canbe used widely, which can mourn for the dead, also sacrifice to Heaven,Ancestor and Country. But we make a choice by the emotion inthe works, thearticles which sacrifice to Heaven and God aren' t studied. Part ofepitaphs can be taken as a reference, which have broken the traditionalwriting formula, and expressed the authors' grief profoundly. The study to the funeral orations of Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan, includesthree parts——grieving for relatives and friends, mourning for theancient sages. The articles to grieve for the dead relatives are grieved, like "the Funeral Oration for Madam Zheng" "the Funeral Oration forthe Twelfth Nephew" etc. Han Yu' s daughter, Liu Zongyuan' s mother, daughter and cousin, got into trouble and even got killed in foreign lands, because of their relegation. So they were mourning, ashamed andremorseful. The funeral orations for friends take up an importantproportion in Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan's works, there are 18 and 11respectively. Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan were confidants in the literaturerealm, but there were contradictions, because of the differences in theirconsciousness and political orientation. Because their orientations weredifferent, Han Yu and his friends were bosoms in the domain of literature;Liu Zongyuan and his friends were close comrade-in-arms in thereformation movement. The articles to mourn for the dead sages, beingfull of true feelings, are in response to the sages' life and writers'personal experiences. Han Yu hid his talent in a napkin when he was young,so he yearned for Tian Heng, who were righteous person, hoped to beenappreciated. Liu Zongyuan was patriotic and loyal to the throne, but beensent into exile until he died. He was indignant at the injurious verdict, but his resolve wasunshaken. He regarded the sages as his confidantsand models, for example Qu Yuan, Yue Yi and Chang Hong. Hegain strengthand courage from his models, his writings displayed dauntless and heroicspirit.
