The special Ba-sentcnce in Mandarin Chinese is difficult to learn for foreign students. Thisthesis intends to study Vietnamese students' acquisition of Ba-sentence from the perspectives ofSecond Language Acquisition and Sociolinguistics. A quantitative analysis is made based on datafrom a special test and investigation. One is to study Vietnamese students' acquisition of fivefrequently-used sentence patterns of Ba-sentence comprising three semantic types on threeoccasions of examination. These data are collected from oral tests in a nature state, tests in classin a nature state and tests in class in a forced state. The other is to study the linguistic and thenonverbal factors of Vietnamese students' acquisition of these five sentence patterns ofBa-sentence. Statistic analyses come to three results. Firstly, different occasions of examinationaffect Vietnamese students' acquisition of these five sentence patterns of Ba-sentence. It is alsofound that students learn the "displacement" and "equivalent" Ba-sentence patterns better than"result" Ba-sentcnce patterns. Secondly, from the perspective of linguistic factors, the negativetransfer from their native language Vietnamese affects significantly their acquisition of thesentence patterns of forced-used Ba-scntcncc, and a negative correlation emerges between them,no statistically significant affection is found in the first foreign language of Vietnamese studentswhen they acquire these five sentence patterns of Ba-sentence. Finally, from the perspective ofnonverbal factors, a positive correlation exists between their acquisition of these five sentencepatterns of Ba-scntcncc and different grades, family occupational backgrounds; whereas nostatistically significant affection exists in different learning attitudes and family languagebackgrounds. Accordingly, the thesis has given some advice for teaching Vietnamese studentsBa-sentence in Mandarin Chinese.
