| University life is undergraduates' turning period in the process of their personal mental development. They are facing a series of mental development issues, including university adaptation, study, interpersonal relation adaptation, emotional problems, and profession choice, etc., which are also bewildering the singleton-dominant undergraduates in their mental development. The successful solutions to these issues will not only have direct influence on their physical and mental development in the university, but also have profound significance in their development in adulthood. The question of how to construct and create the university supporting system for undergraduates, enhance theoretical study of university adaptation, create new work mode for mental health education, and improve undergraduates' university adaptation and mental health status has become an important issue that receives much attention from educators and researchers. Based on the literature review, this paper intends to make some research on undergraduates' university adaptation, social support and personality and the relationship between them, and put forward some rational suggestions on creative mental health education in the universities.In this paper, questionnaires are used as the method of study, with SPSS11.5 and AMOS4.0 applied as the statistical software, and Chinese College Students Adaptation Inventory, Social Support Evaluation Inventory, and Youth Small-Five Personality Inventory as the study tools. Taking 893 college students from three universities and colleges in Xi'an as the participants of study, the. paper investigates the current situation of undergraduates' university adaptation and social support, analyzes the relationship between university adaptation, social support, and personality and constructs the mode of the relation structure of the variables.The result of the study indicates:Firstly, on the whole, there is no significant difference on undergraduates' university adaptation in terms of gender, grade, major, family background, and singleton, which means that undergraduates' university adaptation is generally balanced and in good condition. But in specific aspects, significant differences exist in undergraduates' university adaptation in terms of gender, grade, major, family background and singleton.Secondly, there is no significant difference in personality in terms of gender, major, family background, and singleton, except in agreeability in terms of grade. On the whole and in specific aspects, significant differences lie in undergraduates' social support in terms of grade, major, gender, family background and singleton.Thirdly, the total mark and the marks of specific aspects of undergraduates' university adaptation are positively related to social support (except satisfaction and objective support), and positively connected with extroversion, agreeability, caution, and openness, but negatively correlated to emotion in personality. The total mark and the marks of specific aspects of social support are positively related with extroversion, agreeability, caution, openness, but negatively related with emotion in personality.Fourthly, personality, social support and demographics variables can be of some help in predicating university adaptation.Fifthly, personality and demographics variables can be of some help in predicating undergraduates' social support.Sixthly, the relation mode of undergraduates' university adaptation, personality and social support shows that personality can affect the social support and have direct influence on undergraduates' university adaptation. And this mode proves the hypothesis in the paper.Seventhly, the paper suggests that society, families, universities and the undergraduates should work together to take effective measures to improve undergraduates' university adaptation.The innovation of the study is mainly characterized by systematically exploring the current situation and difference of undergraduates' university adaptation on the whole and its seven aspects in specific and the difference of social support on the whole and its three aspects in specific and the relationship between university adaptation, social support and personality. The study differs from any other study in that there is the significant statistical difference in study adaptation, school life adaptation, emotion adaptation and satisfaction in terms of grade, and the relationship mode of university adaptation, social support and personality shown by this study is different from that studied by other research due to different research method and sample. In theory, this paper systematically analyzes the present situation and characteristics of undergraduates' university adaptation and social support, improves the awareness of the characteristics of undergraduates' mental development, enriches the content and broadens the field of university mental health education, and provides theoretical base for constructing new university support system. In practice, the exploration and construction of effective university support system can not only enhance the mental health education in the university, but also help improve undergraduates' university adaptation and mental health. |
