The task-based approach has been adopted and studied since 1980's by a number of researchers who focus on second language acquisition and foreign language teaching. Based on the development of the second language acquisition, social constructivism, humanism, experiential philosophy of education, learning theory and the instructional theory the task-based approach emerged. The key principle of task-based approach is"learning by doing", and it places emphasis on learning and problem solving activities by using the target language to reach consensus, rearrange information or to present the possible solutions to certain problems. And it is always organized around a variety of different kinds of tasks which are related to the real life, taking the learners'desire of accomplishing some specific tasks as the motivation of their further communicative learning. The learning of the language is accomplished during the process of using a series of cognitive and communicative procedures. There are few detailed empirical researches on the application of TBA into Chinese English teaching especially taking college students as the subjects even though such researches are widely conducted in foreign countries. The domestic researchers pay more attention to the theoretical studies and fewer studies focus on oral English teaching by employing TBA.This thesis discusses the theoretical framework of TBA, the principles and the characteristics of TBA which are related to oral English teaching. And the thesis searches to apply TBA into traditional intensive reading class in order to improve the non-English majors'oral proficiency.
