Language transfer has been a main issue in the field of second languageacquisition and language teaching. Taylor has proved that language learnerstend to depend more on their first language at the elementary stage thantheintermediate or advanced level. When the first language and the targetlanguage have some coincidences in structure, the positive transfer mightoccur; otherwise, the negative transfer would influence the learners. From thepersonal teaching experience, the author noticed that the negative transfer hadbeen caused in the process of English tenses learning among Mongoliancollege students. Especially when there were no equivalent rules or formsbetween the target language and their first language, the misusages of Englishpresent perfect with simple past had occurred.Based on the language transfer theories, an experimental research hasbeen conducted in two groups of Mongolian college students to see ifMongolian tense and aspect has had any influence on their English presentperfect learning. The comparison between Mongolian and English tenses hasbeen used in their English tense teaching. The result shows that the studentshave made great progress in their present perfect tense learning.The paper consists of six sections. In section one, the purpose of theresearch is put forward by analyzing the background. Section two isliterature review in which some relevant terminology are defined and studieson Chinese and minority nationality students are discussed. An analysis of itis made in section three with respect to Mongolian students' learningbackground and the influences of Mongolian tenses on learning Englishpresent tense. Section four contains the analysis of the relevant variables and the research hypothesis. Section five displays the procedures of theexperimental research, and the research findings and discussion. In the lastsection, a conclusion is reached based on the findings and discussions.
