| As one of the Four Disciples of Su Shi, Chao Buzhi is another Chi writer of the Powerful and Free School. About 160 pieces of Chao chi are preserved and become an indispensable part of his contemporary chi circles. This paper is set out to study Chao Buzhi's chi from 4 aspects. The first part discusses how Chao Buzhi's personal life experience exerts influence on his literary creations in terms of the ups and downs of his family and official positions, and the discordance with his teacher and friends. The second part analyzes the content and features of Chao's subject matters in five facets: eulogistic chi about external objects, expressing both sociality and personal emotion; valedictions describing the parting feelings among relatives and friends, and the sorrow of the painful struggle in society and the desire to return to nature; chi about love that eulogize the exquisite craftsmanship of his female slaves and the deep affection to his wife and that between them; chi about relegation from his original official positions, presenting his psychological transmutation from the first agonized state to open-mindedness and then to the longing for retuning to nature; and chi of leisure, showing the contradictory minds between his social pursuit and nature hermitage. The fourth part is about the artistic achievement of Chao Buzhi in 4 aspects. In terms of emotional connotation, Chao chi is cynical but acceptant at some extent with the feature of intensive energetic passion. In the way of expressing personal feeling, Chao chi is on one the hand powerful and free like Su Shi's, on the other hand it is also graceful and restraining like Qing chi. So combining of the two, his lyrical mode produces an effect of both powerfulness and tenderness. For characterization, he applies a lot of images like alcohol, eagle and etc. to portray a character in an image of himself. In the sense of applying allusions, Chao Buzhi is good at exploiting the old allusions, which fit his own experiences and encounters, to implicate the present issues in society on the one hand; and on the other hand he skillfully makes use of lines from Tang poems and achieve an unique and profound artistic effect. At last, based on the analysis of Chao chi's content and style, this paper evaluates Chao Buzhi's transitional position and his influence in the history of chi writing. |
