On Zhang Dongsun's Thoughts Of Cultural Logic

Zhang dongsun was a famous philosopher in the 20th century. He made many creative researches in logic. His thoughts of logic mainly represented the view of cultural logic. He looked on logic as the cultural product. So there are different logics in different countries. Logic is not prior and universal but diverse in every culture backgrounds. He compared the Chinese logic to the western logic from language aspect and said the difference of languages resulted in the difference of thoughts so there were different formal logic. The reason why China doesn't have western logic is because Chinese logic is emerged from special background with it's characteristic and demands itself. He compartmentalized logic to four types, analyze every type's characteristic, origin and their mutual relations and pointed out Chinese logic and western logic were different types. In his eyes there are not formal logic and logic for mathematicians but are logics of metaphysics and political thoughts in China. The reason is that Chinese philosophy care political campaign more than other activities.Zhang dongsun isn't a logician. But there are many creative and instructive aspects in his thoughts of logic. For example, many scholars connect Chinese Ming-bian-xue to culture for their research and make great contributions. These are meaningful. Moreover Zhang dongsun studied logic from language aspect, emphasized the peculiarity of logic and used the method of comparison but not analogy to study. All of these should be revelatory to our research . We can learn his worthy ideas and realize his scarcity to promote logical development. This is the significance to study Zhang dongsun's thinking.
