"Rakish & Thoughtful" Dance

Bi Feiyu is recognized in the literary world by his unique style of "Rakish and Meaningful". As mentioned by Bi Feiyu, this is my understanding to novels, and the ideal of my novels. "Rakish & thoughtful" are the key features of Bi's novels, existing throughout his compositions. From his historical novels in his early years, to the recent narration of Cultural Revolution, Bi is delicately handling the relationship between "Thoughtfulness" & "Rakishness" in his every single step. As said by Bi, "Rakishness" is often appears to be "airy" and "agile" through his narration. And "thoughtfulness" on the other hand is the tragical shade in his novels. The neat combination of the two characteristics contributed to one of the key features of Bi's novels, and also a non-negligible viewpoint to study his novels.From this viewpoint, readers can clearly identify Bi's effort and progress.This essay comprises of four sections. The first section will show that "Rakishness and thoughtfulness" is an ever-existing feature in Bi's novels, by simply reviewing Bi's course of novel writing. Bi's writing style of "light vs. heavy" makes his novels delicate without any trace, thus reached a higher stage of aesthetics. Light and weight exchange on his hands, behind the idea of "light vs. heavy" is a new step forward in his novel writing.The following two sections will analyze the "thoughtfulness" in the novel contents. Bi creates a thoughtful atmosphere by choosing a subject and tragical hue. Life is a grey and helpless existence in front of history, his novels on the history of power and women tragedies best demonstrated the "thoughtfulness". When handling the historical topics, Bi doesn't stay in the superficial layer, but deeply dive to the ethnics, culture and humanity behind the scene, points out the nature of power history. In the women tragedies, jegret to personal unhappiness leads to deep questioning the existence of life. Provided that Su Tong's novels make readers feel "sad", then Bi Feiyu's "thoughtfulness" makes readers feel real "pain".The last section focuses on the "Rakishness". His wording and skills expressed the rakish style of narrating. In the wording, Bi pursues a kind of light humor; while in the structuring, Bi's shifting on viewpoints and narrating rhythm is the most popularly commended. From the various viewpoints, readers feels a kind of freshness they never experienced. Such deep and shallow shifting of viewpoints also enables the writer to better control his narrating rhythms, which made the whole passage airy and agile like running clouds and springing rivers.
