Lights In The Dark

In the beginning of the essay, I give the definition of Yu Hua's Cultural Revolution novels, that is the novels of Yu Hua based between 50's and 70's of 20th century, which includes these four novels --Cry in the rain,Life,Xusanguan mai xue ji,Brother. After reading them carefully and deeply, I analyze the female characters in these novels, and point out that virtuous wife, nice mother, wet hen and complaining women are the basic characteristics about the heroines which are shown out directly by Yu Hua. In order to prove my view, I sum up the history background of the women, their economic status, their political status, their social position and emotional position of the women, which are the basic reason why the female characters are like that. The analysis of the characteristic of the women supports my view, and I go further to point out that endurance, obedience, kindness, cowardice, strong, and disgrace to the weak are the main characteristic of these heroines. The analysis makes me see the heroines in Yu Hua's novels more vivid and well-stacked. Among the analysis, the study of emotional position and disgrace to the weak are rarely seen in the study of Yu Hua before, but I prove them in detail. In the end, after get the summary of these female characters, I point out the importance of these characters in Yu Hua's Culture Revolution novels, that is to make the heroes outstanding, to make the characters of the novel more colorful and make other characters more vivid, to show the changing attitude of the writer towards the female, to alleviate the emotion during reading and bring warmth and strength to the readers.
