The function of literary translation is to show the aesthetics effects to people, and the aim is to fulfill the aesthetic representation of a literary work. Jeanne Kelly and Nathan K. Mao's co-translation of Ch'ien Chung-shu's masterpiece Fortress Besieged has maintained an unrivaled reputation ever since it was published. Many people write articles discussing the highlights of this version from different perspectives. However, aesthetic research on the translation of Fortress Besieged has been much neglected and findings in this field are limited, and have not developed comprehensively, scientifically and systematically. Therefore, with the guidance of Jauss and Iser's Reception Aesthetics and Nida's Functional Equivalence, this thesis deals with the English version of Fortress Besieged through an aesthetic approach. The devices and effects of the aesthetic representation in the English version of Fortress Besieged are studied through the analysis for some typical examples from the perspectives of language and culture. Furthermore, the artistic achievements of the translation works are analyzed contrastively with the purpose to arouse people's attention for the aesthetic representation in literary translation.
