This article uses the traditional sources and the archaeology materials, emplicates the function of alternate capital in pre-Qin period elaborately,then analize the characteristic and influnce of the alternate capital's functions and furtherly promulgates the important position of pre-qin's alternate capital in our ancient society.The difference between main capital and the alternate capital can be considered in the perspective of levels of social productive forces and the archaeo logical matericals.Therefore,we think pre-Qin alternate capital includes the Yanshi city in Shang dynasty, Ao,Xiang,Xing,Yan in earlier Shang period, Zhaoge in later Shang dynasty,Luoyi and Qiyi in Xizhou Dynasty, the Chu Wucheng (i.e. Chu palace wall in archaeological discovery today), Chen, Cai, Bugeng in Chu courtry of the Warriod period ,Yueyang, Yongcheng in the Qin courtry, the alternate capital in Yan courtry, Gao Tang, Pinglu, Ju, Jimo in the Qi gourtry and so on.The appearance of the alternate capital in acient times is due to the ruler's need, as well as pre-Qin's alternate capital establishment. Because of the differences of the humane and natural environment, the Pre-Qin's alternate capitals take on some nauces. Generally speaking their function may include military, politics, and sacrificial three aspects.
