On political occasions, politicians and diplomats achieve their political purposes through various realizations of hedging strategies. However, it is worthwhile to take notice that hedging in political diplomatic language conceals real meanings from hearers, which results in hearers cannot make right judgments. Therefore, it is of great importance to perform a study on the realizations of hedging strategies in political diplomatic language. This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter gives the introduction. In the second chapter, the present thesis concludes main researches both from abroad and at home. On the basis of this conclusion, the present thesis provides the theoretical background of the present paper in Chapter Two. The definition of political diplomatic language is also given in this part: only the speeches or statements by diplomats and politicians who represent authorized countries and areas can be called as political diplomatic language.Chapter Three and Chapter Four are the main part of the present study. The third part analyzes the realizations of hedging strategies from linguistic means such as lexical realizations, phrasal realizations, syntactic realizations and grammatical realizations. Examples from speeches and statements by diplomats and politicians from both abroad and at home (mainly deal with China and America) are collected and categorized. In the fourth part, based on Grice's Co-operative Principle and its four maxims, the present thesis analyzes and categorizes examples of realizing hedging strategy through breaking the four maxims. Diplomats and politicians attempt to follow the Co-operative Principle but always break the four maxims on actual political occasions. The pragmatic functions of hedging are concluded briefly on this basis. The last part gives conclusion of major findings and meanwhile it also points out the problems in this study and puts forward suggestions for further research.
