Listening is assuming greater importance in foreign language classroom. And among the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, listening is undoubtedly very vital. The purpose of the thesis is to survey what and how the vocational college non-English major students use listening comprehension strategies. And through experimentation we find that the students' performance in listening comprehension test could be enhanced remarkably with the help of listening comprehension strategies delivering.The thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter One introduces the background of research, and Chapter Two is a literature review, which introduces various definitions and classifications of language learning strategies and listening strategies from the point of view of different researchers. Chapter Three introduces the process of comprehension and schema theory, and Chapter Four explains the research methods employed in the study. The research designs two research instruments: questionnaire and experimentation, and analyzes the data collected from the questionnaire survey. Chapter Five is the suggestions of listening comprehension strategies for vocational college non-English major students, it states the specifics of the vocational college non-English major students, then suggests what listening comprehension strategies should vocational college students have and how to train them. Chapter Six is the conclusion of the thesis.105 first-year vocational college non-English major students from three classes of Chongqing College of Electronics and Technology were selected randomly to complete a questionnaire. The result is that a majority of students are ignorant of these listening comprehension strategies, especially the social-affective strategies. So it is crucial for the teachers to foster the awareness of listening comprehension strategies of the students, and help them to adopt them integrally in the listening comprehension. According to the Curriculum Standard of English for Higher Vocational College, six listening comprehension strategies are recommended for vocational college non-English major students: two meta-cognitive strategies: planning and evaluating, three cognitive strategies: predicting, top-down processing and note-taking, and one social-affective strategy: cooperating. As for the limitation of the thesis, further study is still demanded in this field.
