With the development of Descriptive Translation Studies(DTS)as well as the application of both quantitative and qualitative methodology, the study of style in translation began to aquire more interest from the schoolars abroad and at home.In this thesis, the author tries to show how transltor' style can be studied under descriptive translation studies by two aspects of product-oriented and function-oriented:integrating predecessors' sporadic research effectively with special attention attached to designed text corpus. The whole thesis consists of five parts. To begin with, the author gives a brief introduction to the establishment of DTS and some pioneering researches where DTS is applied to translator' style, along with the purpose and significance of this research.Chapter two is contributed to defining the theme of the research and reviewing literature regarding polysystem theory,DTS and the style of the translator.Besides,The three most important achievements aquired by DTS are pointed out and its development in China are described.Chapter three and charpter four constitutes the main body of the thesis and gives an account of descriptive study of the style of the translator in details.First, the significant issues of this topic are summarized including translatability of the style, manipulation and rewriting. Then, two continuous approaches of product-oriented and function-oriented in the style of the translator on DTS are studied. In product-oriented study,corpus-based translation studies in descriptive translation are illustrated, with focus on corpus design for the study of translator's style which includes object of study, parameters and variables. The basic view that function-oriented descriptive study held that translation is rewriting and manipulating, which means approaching the translator's style from a cultural perspective, specifically speaking,by examining the style of the translator in connection with the three factors:ideology, poetics and patronage. With the theoretical exploration of the methodology mentioned above, this thesis also makes a tentative attempt to give a descriptive analysis of the style of the translators of Hong Lou Meng-David Hawkes & John Minford and Yang Xianyi & Gladys Yang. Why the individual style of translators is formed is given to make further exploration into product-oriented discovery and function-oriented explanation.Chapter five concludes the whole thesis and summarizes the major findings and limitations, and points out that the style of the translator will achieve rapid development under the framework of descriptive translation studies.
