This thesis gives a definition of traditional graph and classifies different types. The initiation of the traditional graph is restricted by the spirit and mores of a certain time. Its evolvement is greatly affected by politics, philosophy, religion and culture of different times, including official aristocratic, folk and ethnic culture. The classical philosophy formed the theoretical basis of the traditional graph. The Confucianism, the Taoism and the Buddhism formed their system of their own, while influencing each other, therefore helped form the unique character and spirit description of philosophy, appeal to Chinese people. The traditional graph powerful in symbolizing, implying, expressing, multi-layered meaning and metaphorical embraces, profound significances, cultural background, practical and social value. Utilizing the profound significance, the design of modern plane shows rich imagination and the reasonable model. Modern plane design is inspired by the structure, rules of traditional graph, such as Taiji graph, one of the oldest abstract graphs in the world, time-space graph, spatial graph and temporal graph. Ancient Chinese color system is composed of the penta-colored universe of Confucianism, the non-colored universe of Taoism, the multi-colored universe of Buddhism and diversified color of minority. The symbolical, decorative, subjective and formulistic theory and technique are widely applied in modern plane design. The longitudinal and transverse inheritance of the traditional graph is also discussed in the thesis. Modern art design tries to inherit the essence of traditional graph by making use of its form. Graphs have being created in China in its long history, at the same time, the whole theory of the art design is also established including philosophy, the significance and the regulation of graph, the chromatology and so on. To study the process of application of traditional graph in modern art design is a process of innovation while maintaining its national characteristic, we must fully understand the charm of traditional graph, the source of modern art design.
