More attention to the research on book design has been paid in recent year, but most researches are only concerning Chinese or the western book design. It is few studies which compare the differences of book design between in China and in the west. A systemic and deep research on contemporary book design in China and in the west is presented in this paper. It is unique that putting the design culture in the world range, and it is profound to compare Chinese design with the western design at the same age. The world is an organism, and every national culture is of collision and integration. The design culture which is the physical form of the people spirit has its own characteristics. Every national design culture is different, and it can be compared into develop.The paper contains five parts: In part one, the status quo on book design, as well as the purpose and the coverage of the research were presented. In part two, the basic conception of book design, such as the materiality, the basic elements and the formal language were introduced. In part three, according to the comparative studies on the philosophical thoughts, social environmental factors and the drawing art, differences on book design between China and the west were studied. In part four, the art book design in China and the west from the Two-dimensional and multi-dimensional formal language of book design with examples were discussed. In the last part, the collision, integration and progress were presented from the aspects of the duty of designers, the national tradition and foreign culture.The intent of the paper is to develop traditional culture basing on the mix of Chinese and western culture. Through examples, the characters of book design in China and in the West are obvious. The differences on book design in China and in the west come from the philosophical thoughts, social environmental factor and so on. Through comparative research, to learn from other's strong points to offset our weakness is the aim. Our design culture need to be better developed, and which can enable us to do better and better during the design.
