In the middle age of Ming Dynasty (about mid 16th), Portugueses , with their advanced sailing technology ,arrived in Macao of China. Here they established the basement for their missionary and trade work. From then on, Chinese official got direct contact with the West for the first time. East and West cultural exchange in Macao has never interrupted until Opium War. What's more, the model of cultural exchange that happened in Macao presents obviously distinctive quality.In this thesis, the distinctness of East and West cultural exchange in Macao between Mid 16th to Mid 19th are divided into four parts: unique passing way for cultural exchange, opening outside and closed-door policies, peaceful model for cultural exchange in whole perspectives. Starting with theses parts, I want to describe the general conditions of the cultural exchange in Macao from mid Ming dynasty to the Opium War, and detect the peaceful way in cultural exchange. In the text, the model of peaceful cultural exchanges are analyzed according to the history conditions , and finally gets a conclusion on the influence and practical significance produced by it to the modern Macao.
