Laurence Sterne (1713-1768), as a novelist, occupies an important poison in the 18th century literature history of England. His masterpiece "The Life and Opinion of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman "which breaks the confines of the traditional novels, have the characteristic of post-modernity. Although this novel was written in 18th century, it nearly has all the characteristics of post-modern novels and thus was regarded as "the pioneer of the post-modern novels". The disorder and complicated narrative form, the sinuous story plots and the humor and interesting jokes in the article remind us of the "absence" in meaning of post-modern novels.This thesis analyzes Sterne's "The life of Shandy" in the view of writer's writing ideas, absorbing the theory of narrative The highlights of this thesis are focused on the following three aspects: vagarious narrative form, extraordinary character-building and the special humorous narrative style. The purpose of studying Sterne's works is to let the readers have a deep understanding about this great writer's innovative achievement to literature.
