This paper attempts to analyze the translation of political terms from the theoretical perspective of domestication and foreignization, with a view to exploring their features in the Chinese-English translation of political terms. The paper starts with a brief review of the relevant studies of some scholars, who focus their attention on the methods of translation of political terms. According to these scholars, the methods used mainly involve literal translation and free translation which overstressed content and form and neglected the influence of cultural factors on translation. With Venuti's theory of domestication and foreignization as the framework of study, the present paper analyzes the characteristics of the translation of political terms from cultural perspective and summarizes that this kind of translation can be classified into source-culture-oriented translation and target-culture-oriented translation (foreignization and domestication). Besides, the bilingual competence of the translator, the purpose of translation and the capacity of target readers'acceptance are the factors that determine the choice of domestication and foreignization. Besides, domestication and foreignization can be subdivided according to the degree of approaching source culture or target culture. The significance of this study is to emphasize the influence of cultural factors upon translation. We hope it can provide a new theoretical perspective to the analysis of the translation of political terms and cast some new light on the understanding and the using of them.
