William Blake had three professional careers: engraver, designer and poet. As an English poet in the Romantic Period, he created some lyrics which are natural and clear, while later he produced lots of prophets that bewildered the readers and the critics. In order to elucidate Blake's prophets and avoid over-interpreting them regardless of the integrity of Blake's composition, based onreading most poets of Blake's, I analyze three images------Urizen, Orc and Los inBlake's prophets according to his personal experience and the culture background to understand Blake and his composition comprehensively and profoundly. The essay has three parts. In Chapter One, by close reading Blake's poets, the images of Urizen, Orc and Los are analyzed, which paves a way to understand the culture connotation of them. In Chapter Two, the archetypes of the three characters are studied, which shows that Blake's prophets are relevant to the Greek myth and Bible. In the last chapter, according to the background of the romantic period, the relevance between the three characters and Blake's experience of reality in the era Blake lived was stressed, and the philosophic connotations of the three characters were explained. Then we can draw a conclusion that there are vivid imagines in Blake's prophets as in his lyrics; the imagines are reflection on culture environment and background, so are his oppressive soul. Therefore, although Blake's prophets are hard to understand at the first sight, if we apply the information beyond the prophets to study his poets as the method to explore and explain the three images from the different aspects discussed above, we will unveil the mysterious prophets and understand Blake's personality and poetrymore comprehensively and properly.
