The Color Purple is Alice walker's representative work. The novel is rich in content, and deep in subject, it has discussed a series of problems in American society such as the race, weman and religion. A lot of people have been shocked strenuously by this novel. In 1985, the novel has been reorganised by Spielberg who is a famous director in American. This movie arouses intense echo, and has been nominated for 10 Oscar Awards. It provides a nice platform for us to study the relationship between novel and movie. Due to the different categories, the movie art and novel show imperssive difference in representation. However, because of the inherent nature, such as plot development shared by the two, hence makes the novel-movie adaptation become possible. Classics or best-selling novels are the "wellhead" for a lot of movies, and also become excellent movie works once they have been adapted successfully. Of course, the director plays an important role in it. In fact, a successful adaptation is the interactive process between "common character" and "individuality".This paper starts off from the relationship between novel and movie, to analyse the cinematographic adaptation of The Color Purple's success. The paper in Chapter 1 will find the inherent art regulations shared by novel and movie art. In Chapter 2, the paper mainly discusses the aesthetic transformation from novel to movie. The paper in the third Chapter starts off from the relationship between the director and the literature version, then, expounds to the continuity and variation of the movie to the novel, in order to testify that the novel-movie adaptation, not only be restrained by the art inherent law, but also effected by the extrinsic factors.
