In translating Chinese classics into English, the effect of translation is what a translator cares. The readers' smooth reading of the version as well as understanding of the great Chinese culture is what the translator pursues. This paper attempts to study the method of "similarity in form" and "similarity in spirit" through the English translation of Fu Sheng Liu Ji(FSLJ《浮生六记》),rendered by Lin Yutang,in order to find out a principle applicable to translating Chinese classics into English by native Chinese translators.Traditional Chinese translation theory was closely connected with philosophy-aesthetics from theory to methodology."Similarity in form" and "similarity in spirit" is one of traditional Chinese translation theories.Since the 20thcentury,there have been hot discussions about "similarity in form" and "similarity in spirit" in Chinese translation circles.Lin Yutang is a famous litterateur and translator in China. He enjoys a strong bilingual and bicultural proficiency.Besides writing fictions,he translated and compiled traditional Chinese fictions to introduce traditional Chinese culture.Six Chapters of a Floating Life is Lin's most successful translation to show his translation grounding. The writing style of FSLJ and the unique life attitude, value, temperament and aesthetic sentiment of Chinese literators catered for Lin's life attitude and character.Lin is one of advocators of aesthetic translation and a translator who put forward the idea that "translation is an art" early. How to realize the effect of lifelikeness and make the beauty in the original text be expressed in the translation? This thesis analyzes beauty in the translation from some aspects through the translation theory of "similarity in form" and "similarity in spirit".What's more important,it can be concluded that the translation theory of "similarity in form" and "similarity in spirit" is an important and effective translation theory which need the study and application.
