Intercultural communicative competence (ICC) has become more and more important with the development of economy and technology. Since the 1980s, culture teaching has set up its position in foreign language teaching(FLT) theoretically, and the final goal of FLT is to cultivate learners' ICC. However, China's FLT consumes too much time and energy but yields too little fruit. This results in learners' insufficiency in ICC."Cultural experience consists of any encounter between learners and another way of life, be it first-hand through direct involvement with people of the other culture or indirectly through learning materials in the language classroom. These encounters elicit four kinds of culture learning, or cultural knowings——knowing about, knowing how, knowing why, and knowing oneself. According to Moran, cultural experience can be used to FLT classroom and is an important way to cultivate the learners' ICC.As a colorful cultural experience, film is one of the most important ways to cultivate students' intercultural awareness and competence. Based on the Classroom Culture Learning Model, the present paper resorts to film teaching, a kind of cultural experience, to probe into the effective methods to cultivate the non-English majors' ICC. The thesis proves the feasibility of film teaching, designs a teaching plan sample and discusses its advantages and disadvantages to cultivate the ICC.The thesis consists of six chapters.Chapter One presents an introduction, in which the background and significance of the research, and the general structure of the thesis are briefly explained. Chapter Two reviews the definitions of language, culture, communication and intercultural communicative competence and explores their relationships. Chapter Three gives a detailed description about culture teaching research history at home and abroad and discusses the necessity of developing ICC. Chapter Four puts forwards the concept of "cultural experience", "the Classroom Culture Learning Model" and the relevant "teaching guidelines." Chapter Five proves the feasibility of film teaching(a kind of cultural experience), creatively combines film teaching and the cultivation of ICC, and proposes cultural experiential teaching methods in FLT classroom according to "The Classroom Culture Learning Model" by Moran. A general planning steps for a film lesson has also been put forward. Chapter Six serves as the conclusion which summarizes the main points of the study, some limitations and suggestions for further study of culture teaching in FLT.
