Ernest Hemingway is one of the most celebrated and remarkable writers in the world literature. His famous work The Old Man and the Sea has attracted numerous readers and a great many scholars all over the world. Critics have spent much academic energy on it from different perspectives. The previous critiques of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea are limited to view Santiago as an undefeatable "hero" and to praise his mental triumph, which have been lagged behind the times. In this paper, the author tries to reexamine this famous work on a textual level by associating Hemingway's work with the newly-developed ecocriticism, which accord with the development of modern society. The research has fully proved Hemingway's ecological consciousness by analysis of his formation of ecological consciousness, his description of the sea and sea creatures, the ecological setting of the novel, the language features, the harmony between man and nature, and the exploring of Santiago's ecological consciousness. The research has proved that Hemingway embodied his strong ecological consciousness in this book by analyzing his setting of the novel, features of the language, harmony between man and nature, and the hero Santiago's ecological consciousness. The results indicate that Hemingway is a writer with ecological consciousness and his creation of The Old Man and the Sea illustrates his worries for human's living environment. The symbiosis between man and nature is well embodied in this work. Demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, the equality between human and the sea creatures indicates that human is not superior to other creations but a part of the intricate web of life. In respecting nature, human beings can live in harmony with other creations. The vivid description of all the beautiful creatures in the book conveys a harmonious relationship between human and nature.Nowadays, with the deterioration of the environment, this research has a profound meaning on enriching the methods of literature criticism, attracting modern people's attention on environmental problems, and arousing ecological consciousness of protecting the nature through the new research and reexamining of Hemingway's famous work in this thesis. It is Hemingway's famous book---The Old Man and the Sea that rings the warning bells of protecting natural environment and sounds the bugle of the harmony between human and nature.
