A Study On The Theme Of Lesbian Film

In recent years,the idols with neutral image become increasingly popular,which could be validated by the various star-making activities.Even though most of them are not gay or lesbian,they "do arouse people's attention to gender.Like male and female,gay and lesbian now have a euphemism for themselves:the third gender.This group exists from early ancient time,and it could even be found in early literary works,but its social status is really pathetic.While compared with gay,lesbians' condition is much more miserable.They are not only segregated from normal people in tradition perspective,but also from feminists and gay.This condition of isolation attracts humanists' concern,and also arouses mass media's interest.Gradually,a cultural phenomenon with regard to lesbian appears in literary works and cinema.At the mean time,Postmodernism spread rapidly in various study of humanities and social science with the spirit of criticism.Besides that,it also infiltrates all the fields of daily life and even influences our life style and taste.Postmodernism asks people not blindly follow the traditional authority and learn to pay respect to the other. With the encouragement from the spiritof Postmodernism,homosexual group begin to come onto the stage and fight against the prejudice and pressure on them,and strive for their right to pursue for love and happiness.And after experiencing the initial rejoices of fighting and the later betrayal of gay and feminist,lesbian group began to fight as an independent force.And as a good channel to communicate with society,film is used to speak for lesbians.But in the history of culture,art is always connected the irrational aspects of human beings,which can also give us a good explanation why art is always suppressed and considered as low status.Plato drove the poets and painter out of his utopia.Medieval Christian took art lightly.And the modernists believe art for art's sake,which drives art far away from daily life.Only postmodemism has the courage to directly face our life and present the human instinct in the art creation to make radiance of the so-called most low-down aspect of human blaze.From this aspect,the lesbian subject film is not the simple reappearance of desire and instinct,but represents the holiness of aesthetics.The present status of film and lesbian are not optimistic.With the development of film technique,it seems that increasing people focus on the grand spectacles more than others.The so-called commercial films are more welcome in the cinema.And the future of those literary love films seems miserable.Compared with film,lesbian group seems to have a better fate.We can take the lesbian literature as an example. Lesbian stories emerge abundantly from the 1940s in the west,and from the 1990s in China.These stories open a window for people to know the existence of this group. But we have to admit that,most people have great prejudice on lesbians.Besides, people's opinions could also be influenced by some gay films or some vulgar lesbian novels.But we are also glad to see that there are still some good artists insisting on the art pursuit.This thesis is intended to analyze the themes of love and family in lesbian film and illustrates an opinion that the best strategy to pay respect to the other is not to focus on the difference but to pay attention to the similarities with the respect to the difference.But we should also be clear that,although love and family are important to both women and lesbians,lesbians need make much more efforts to maintain the love and the family.In fact,lesbian is always in the struggle of choice between love and family. In the love without the influence and pressure from family,like Yi Huan and Yuhuan's love,they could just focus on their love and experience every taste of love.But in real life,it is really minority.Most lesbians encounter the same family like Wil's.They want love from other family members,and they also want to behave as a family member to protect the family and its dignity in the society,so they should act up to various family expectations.But lesbians also want to follow the heart and live for the love.It is a tough choice indeed,and this will always bother them.This paper consists of five parts including the introduction and conclusion.The introduction illustrates the research motivation,and research purpose and significance. The first chapter introduces the present status of the research.The second chapter will focus on the general study of the film theme and the subject of lesbian.The third chapter is the key part of the whole paper.The films Intimates and Saving Face are selected as examples due to the fact that they give a representative overlook on the theme of lesbian love and family.Thus,the conclusion could be eventually arrived by the mentioned research that human nature and the freedom are the best thing for everyone to cherish.
