History recorded that the relationship between Vietnam and China began from the 2nd and 3rd century BC. It led to the exchanges in culture and especially language between the two countries. The two languages already had 2000 years of exchange until half end of the 19th century. After thousands year, a big quantity of Sino-Vietnamese vocabularies was borrowed to use in Vietnamese language. Although modern Vietnamese is no longer a pictographic language, Sino language's influence is still expressed in various area of daily life and contributes an important part to the Vietnamese vocabulary collection that is Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary.According to statistics, there is approximately 70 percent of Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary in modern Vietnamese; including many vocabularies which have been altered in their semantic and grammar function that brings difficulties Vietnamese students who study Chinese, that means researching the development of Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary can provide a better understanding for people in learning Chinese and using Vietnamese. Therefore, the similarities and differences between Sino-Chinese vocabularies in Vietnamese and the vocabularies with equivalent phonetic in Chinese are chosen to be the research topic of my dissertation for this reason.Content:Firstly, the development of Sino-Vietnamese vocabularies is briefly introduced as well as different definitions of Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary and previous researches on this topic. Moreover, the research objectives, benefits and new ideas of this dissertation are also included. Secondly, the paper continues with the definition of Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary and its main characteristics. The name of Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary in Chinese and its influence in different language aspects are also analysed. Based on the differences of Sino-Vietnamese vocabularies and vocabularies with the equivalent phonetic in Chinese, Sino-Vietnamese vocabularies will be categorized into three different aspects of language, semantic, phonetic and grammar. Each aspect is analysed and illustrated with examples.The third part focuses on presenting the reasons which led to the change in Sino-Chinese vocabulary. Given that social and linguistic factors, which are two main influences caused the change, the reasons are divided into two types on this basis.Finally, the difficulties Vietnamese students facing while learning Chinese which brought by the change in Sino-Chinese vocabulary will be summarized. The paper concludes by analyzing common mistakes and suggesting points in the teaching of Chinese vocabulary.
