On The Formal Language Of Manet's Painting

This paper mainly studies the painting of Manet, a great artist of the 19^th century. It analyses his life, social background and experience as an artist, and makes comprehensive and profound researches on the formal language of his painting. Using contrasting, citing and illustrating, the paper elaborates the formal language of his painting from different angles, such as subject selection, painting technique, composition, creation of the figure, use of line, employment of the optic and drawing, etc. It also evaluates the position of Manet in the art history. Through the analysis of Manet' s art and his absolute value, the author manages to express the independence and advance of Manet as an artist of the 19^th century, and to reflect the importance of Manet' s painting on the research of contemporary realistic painting.
