The purpose of learning English is to improve learners' abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing which enable them to gain communicative competence. As we all know, communication will not take place if the speakers can not understand what they have heard successfully. However, most of the high school students in China are poor in listening competence. And traditionally, in senior high English classes, listening skills tend to get neglected or is practiced inappropriately or inadequately. In order to help students with their listening comprehension and improve their listening competence, the researcher conducted an experiment among 30 Chinese high school students enrolled in DaCheng School between September 2006 and June 2007 to discover whether bottom-up and top-down listening strategies could affect their English listening comprehension skill.The present research is composed of five parts which are introduction, literature review, methodology, results and discussion, and conclusion. And it is designed to investigate the following questions:1. What are the factors affecting students' listening comprehension?2. Do bottom-up and top-down listening strategies affect Chinese EFL learners' listening comprehension? If so, how do bottom-up and top-down listening strategies affect their listening Comprehension?To find out the effect on the students, the researcher utilized several qualitative research methods which include questionnaires, classroom observation and interviews. Quantitative methods were also used to analyze students' scores of placement and achievements tests compared with a controlling group.The results of our investigations indicate that bottom-up and top-down listening strategies have very strong effect on English Foreign Language listening. It can greatly improve students' listening comprehension. But, due to various reasons, for example, small participants, there still exist some limitations.
