On Self-Consciousness Of Contemporary Chinese Female Paintings

"Female Paintings" is a cultural concept that gradually being used in the early 1990s, there is wide soectru, of opinions on its interpretations. Female scholars Tao Yongbai gave it a more appropriate explanation that "any painting that drawn by female artists which depict the living of women or shows women's spirits and emotions with perspective of women, and use the female special expressional form."The development of Chinese Female Paintings experienced a tortuous and protracted process. Female Paintings have been there for a long time, but no initiative of artistic creation. It is a culture carrier dependent on the patriarchy culture which stands in the mainstream. Till the end of 1980s, female artists gradually concerned about their survival status and explored the value of life. They give full play to its own unique sense of female autonomy, which led the women paintings freed from the suppressed "Aphasia" status in the past. Contemporary Female Paintings achieved the transition from "Other" to "self. They has no longer blindly pursued with the consistency of the mainstream men culture, but their inward reflection of what is in their hearts and to be the real masters of art. The Female Paintings in Chinese modern times has tended to be consciousness.The consciousness of the contemporary Chinese Female Paintings is an artistic reflection of the female consciousness from the women painters. The Western feminist theory has brought a lot of ideological impact to the contemporary Chinese women; it advances women to explore the essence of art independently. Female artists take the initiative to fight for pure space for artistic creation, which cut the interference of male chauvinism. They get the concerns and understandings of the audiences by the artistic interpretations of their survival status and the values of life. Of course they are inevitably questioned by the mainstream culture, but under the deconstruction of the context of the mainstream culture, female artists gradually found the feelings when they are positioned in the status of women's subjectivity. This paper mainly expounds on the contemporary Chinese female paintings from the Western feminist perspective and is divided into four parts. The first part (preamble) is to propose the problems to be solved in the thesis, give the definition of the concept of female paintings, and makes an illustration on the current research situation about the female paintings. The second part (Chapterâ… ) is a contemporary analysis of the historical development background of the contemporary female paintings, it is divided two levels of the social history and the painting history, which draws out the following parts. The third part (Chapterâ…¡) is the further analysis and illustration about the women paintings through comparison of the differences between male and female paintings, which is in order to reduce the concept of prejudice and misunderstanding of female painting and give a better understanding of this concept. Part four (Chapterâ…¢) mainly analyses the influence Western feminist theory makes on the contemporary Chinese female paintings, which is the focus of this paper. To analyze the development of contemporary Chinese female paintings from the Western feminist perspective, contemporary female artists show the consciousness of women from three levels of process of artistic creation, artistic works and the artistic acceptation, and more specifically to show the consciousness of contemporary female paintings, enhances the understanding and knowledge about female paintings to ordinary people.
