| News report plays an important role in modern society. Therefore, this thesis is to do some research on straight and interpretative news based on Halliday's thematic theory(2000)and Danes'thematic progression patterns (1970). By comparing the thematic progression patterns of straight and interpretative news to illustrate that in news, a particular column has its preferred theme and thematic progression patterns.The result of this thesis indicates that there are similarities as well as differences between these two types of news. It partially proves the supposition of Fries that there are some inner relations between thematic progression and genres.In Chapter One, the author presents an outline of the research topic.In Chapter Two, the author reviews the research on Theme, Thematic Progression (TP) patterns, genre and news both at home and abroad. She also introduces the straight news and interpretative news in detail.In Chapter Three, the author provides the research design, namely, research method, data sampling, the procedure and the results.In Chapter Four, discussion of the statistic results is presented. The author analyzes and explains the results.In the last chapter, Chapter Five, the author summarizes the results of the study and points out the limitation of this research.
