The twentieth African-American novelist had made a good contribution to the development of American literature. Especialy after 1970 a large number of women Afeican-American writers came out. This caused to the third upsurge of African- merican literature. Among them, Alice Walker plays an important role. She brings her travel experience in Africa and memories of the American civil-rights movement to an examination of the experience of Africa-Americans,mainly in the south,and of Africans. A self-described "womanist",she has maintained a strong focus on feminist issues within African-American culture. Waker won wide recognition with her novel The Color Purple. This novel is an epistolary novel: that is, the book is written in the form of letters. The central character,Celice has her own religious belief in her life. According to describe Celice's growth and the process of awakening,Celice has her own understanding to the Christ. She overturns the traditional conception that the God is a white man. This thesis mainly has three parts to describe the characters' religion sense and the change of it.Part I Walker's own religion sense. According to her experience ,feeling of existence and literary ideal, tracing back to and probing into the connotation and cause of formation of the complex of the complex of black and ideas of religion.Part II The research of the God's literatue imagery. It emphasises analyzing the process of Celice's independense.And how to change her idea about the God. Also how to get the new life with the help of the "God".This is an important part of the thesis. In the novle, Walker tries to tell Africa American women that they should be their own dominators.Part III The reason of the change about the god's imagery. The thesis analyzes the story's historic background and that the white men oppresses the blackmen. So,Celice puts forword "womanism".The concluding is to mainly praise Waker's contribution for the Africa-Americans.
