In the current SL vocabulary acquisition field, many experts have conducted lots of researchers on the relationship between depth of vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension, as well as the relationship between the breath of vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension. Their experiments were based on different formats of reading materials and the concerning vocabulary knowledge and concluded that there was great correlation between the vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension. However, the key that the approaches on how to achieve the better depth of vocabulary knowledge were seldom mentioned or exercised in those writings.The researcher attempts to apply the literary learning as the approach to improve the depth of vocabulary knowledge. Also, the literary works' reading has more beneficial function under the educational purpose of training the general quality of students in China. That's a way to combine the English teaching, whose core is to train students' basic language ability, language communication strategy as well as the cross-culture awareness, with the quality education which more purification and internalization of a individual's knowledge and ability is emphasized.The thesis was mainly based on the questionnaire that reflects the attitude to and belief on the literary learning. After the pre-DVK, the comprehensive literary learning and various learning sources were conducted and provided in the experimental class. The reading of scientific &technological materials was carried out in the controlled class. Then the post-DVK was tested after the 12-week reading program. The result and analysis of the scores of students in the experimental class showed that the depth of vocabulary knowledge had improved after the literary learning. And the statements in the Self-Reports of students reflected that they gained richer interest and higher motive to study English, they managed more on their autonomous study, and they thought more on their study and life than the period before literary learning. While, the statistics in the controlled class and between the Post-DVK of the two classes showed that the reading of scientific &technological materials was not as beneficial as the literary reading to the improvement of the depth of vocabulary knowledge.The literary learning benefited students in better attitude toward English study, better performance on the depth of vocabulary knowledge and stronger sense of cross-culture awareness.
