A Study Of Yu Dafu's Subjectivity As A Translator

This dissertation examines Yu Dafu's subjectivity as a translator. It purports to explore Yu's achievements in literary translation. As a translator, Yu exercises his subjectivity, especially in his source-text selection and his translation strategy.This dissertation is composed of six chapters.Chapter One is the introduction. It covers the objectives and methodology of the research, the preparation and foundation for it as well as Yu's life and literary activities.Chapter Two is the literature review. It reviews the existing literature on Yu's literary translation, and discusses the definition of the translator's subjectivity. It claims that the research of Yu's translation is insufficient, especially of his subjectivity as a translator.Chapter Three discusses Yu's source-text selection and his subjectivity as a translator. It discusses the source-text selection and the translator's subjectivity as well as how Yu exercises his subjectivity in the source-text selection. It holds that under the co-functions of the internal factors and the external forces, Yu selected ten novels as his source texts finally.Chapter Four examines Yu's translation strategy and his subjectivity as a translator. It discusses the definition of translation strategies, the relationship between translation strategies and translator's motive. The focus is on Yu's translation strategy and method. It finds that Yu chiefly took domestication as his main translation strategy and free translation as his translation method.Chapter Five discusses Yu's contribution, in terms of source-text selection and the promotion of modern Chinese, vernacular, by his translation strategy. It also discusses Yu's principle of "Studying-Thinking-Getting". It claims that as a translator Yu has made a number of contributions to the literary translation of China.Chapter Six is the conclusion. It reiterates the findings mentioned above and points out the limitations of this research.
