The theory about language learning strategy and the second language acquisition (SLA) suggests that if learning strategy is employed properly it can facilitate learners' language learning. Learning strategy plays an important role in improving the learners' language proficiency, but teachers emphasize more language knowledge than the learners' learning process and learning ways. They have neglected the teaching of how to learn. Teaching and learning are separated in a way and learning becomes the learners' own business. In fact, some learners do not know how to learn a language and they especially do not know how to master vocabulary effectively. So the learning strategy training of English vocabulary is put into the classroom teaching in the research, and it is hoped that the strategy training can aid vocabulary acquisition.The research subjects in the study are students from Nantong Technician Institute who have learned English for three years in junior high school. The researcher had vocabulary learning strategy training on the students for one year. The methods like questionnaire, students' interview and vocabulary test were used in the study. All the effort is to find whether the vocabulary strategy training is effective or not to the low level learners, what the difference in using strategies between the high-proficiency and low-proficiency students is, and what influence the training has on the students' vocabulary test scores.The study indicates that the vocabulary learning strategy training has positive influence on the students' vocabulary learning. The students can employ strategies more frequently than before. Some of the strategies that were 'seldom used' before the training are 'sometimes used' after the training. The students' test scores of the experimental group are higher than those of the control group according to the vocabulary test after the training and it confirms the effectiveness of the vocabulary strategy training. But there is larger inner difference in the experimental group after training and the high-proficiency students benefit more from the learning strategy training.
