On The Technique Of Arabesque Of Maxine Hong Kingston's Tripmaster Monkey

The paper applies chaos theory to the detailed reading of the literary text Tripmaster Monkey by Maxine Hong Kingston, and systematically studies and discloses the ways of employment of the literary technique"arabesque"wherein. All of The Woman Warrior, China Men and Tripmaster Monkey employ the technique of collage but Tripmaster Monkey is different from the other two in that it is characterized by a combination of mosaic collage and chaotic arabesque, a combination of order and disorder, which constitutes the main part of chaos theory. Both chaos theory and collage began to take shape about the Postmodernist period of 1960s, which also saw the peak of Kingston's creativity.The paper falls into five chapters, with the first chapter introducing Kingston's profession of letters, her overall writing style as well as the basics of chaos theory, alongside the history of the application of collage and arabesque, especially in literature.And the following three chapters elaborate in details on the employment of arabesque respectively from the perspectives of theme, structure and content. This novel covers a variety of themes, including the quest for the truths of life circulation, time and space, order and disorder, peace and war, gender and racial disparities. And this paper approaches the structure arabesque in two aspects, the ordered structure and the disordered structure. The content arabesque exhibits a gallery of the Western and Chinese artistic outputs. The last chapter draws a conclusion of the whole discussion: the employment of arabesque has successfully integrated the collection of fragmented pieces of the stories into an organic whole, making it into a multi-dimensional picture that always deserves a second reading.
