Gulliver's Travels is a masterpiece of Jonathan Swift, one of the greatest satirical writers in Britain in the 18th century. With its outstanding thought and artistic value, Swift's Gulliver's Travels is praised as the model for world satirical literature. In this thesis, the author mainly discusses satiric art and his social ideal in Swift's Gulliver's Travels.Swift makes the best use of imaginary method to describe all kinds of people in English society with an eye of criticizing. However,it is not all Swift means to satirize and criticize the corruption. The status of the society still can not be changed. So Swift conceives a perfect society in accordance with his ideal which he hopes he can put into practice and offers cure for the social evil.Different writers in different cultures and social backgrounds will express their thoughts in different ways.Swift adopts various satire techniques to criticize social evils and corruption.Due to his rough life and political disappointment,Swift exerts his writing to realize his imaginative pursuit and get temporary spiritual consolation. The utopia in the illusory place proves that Swift does not want to make it in realization but set up a kind of hope with societal peace, justice and humanity. The importance is not its content but his spirit to lead man to make for a beautiful tomorrow.
