The Classification And Comparison Of Chinese Associative Compounds And English Compound's Motivation

In the traditional study"ci"in Chinese is always taken as the equivalent of the congcept of"word"in English.In the last several years some scholars like XuTongqiang and PanWenguo put forward the theory of soinogram as the basic unit which argues that Chinese studies should be based on sinogram since sinogram is the basic unit in Chinese. As English words are the basic unit of English, so the sinogram and English words are in the same level of study. Chinese associative compounds and English compounds are both compounding unit and have the basis of comparison. In this thesis, the writer classifies the motivation of them and makes a comparison of them in order to find the similarities and the difference between them.The writer analyzes the sinogram and English words material separately."The table of 3500 sinogram in common use"is the material for sinogram. According to the feature of associative compounds and the definition the writer checks them one by one and picks out 203 of them as the associative compounds. which are the object of the analysis. Refer to the English words material, the writer finds 212 compound words from the front part of the dictionary"Modern English Association Memory Dictionary", which are the object of this thesis.In this thesis the methods of analysis, induction, statistics, and making list are used. Specific steps are as follows:Firstly, analyze the structure of the sinogram and English words to classify the compounding motivation and then account the numbers of each class. Secondly, analyze the referring motivation of both the sinogram and English words according to their original meanings and account the numbers.Thirdly, compare the compounding motivation and the referring motivation and induce the similarities and the differences.Finally, make the classification tables of the sinogram and English words. By the analysis the writer finds that in spied of some similarities, Chinese associative compounds and English compounds have more differences in the compounding and referring motivation. It concludes as Chinese associative compounds are picture-liked, indirect and illegibility while English compounds are grammatical, direct and exact in the motivation of compounding motivation. And in the referring motivation Chinese associative compounds are departed, whole and need to be sensed while English compounds are zero-distance, can be talked and analyzable.The creative point of this thesis is that the writer is the first one to compare the Chinese associative compounds and English compounds on the basis of taking sinogram and the basic unit of Chinese language. And through fix quantity statistics and qualities analysis the difference between the motivation of Chinese associative compounds and English compounds are clear.
