As a famous contemporary American literary theorist and writer, Susan Sontag is playing multi-roles in the Western literary circle. Though her character and critical ideas are one of the focuses of contemporary literary studies, most of these studies are mainly concerned about her literary theories , ignoring her novel writing. As is well-known that her four novels and one short story contain and display Sontag's literary ideas. On one hand, Sontag's main literary idea is"anti-interpretation", at the purpose of promoting the formalist value of liberalism. On the other hand, her novels present the formalist writing principle with three features in narrating style: the non-reliability of narrator, the fragment pattern and maze narration, and the endeavor to construct some feminist voice. Hidden behind these three features, there are profound theorical thoughts, reflecting the special social background—"anti-interpretation", formalist aesthetic view and contemporary feature of post-modernism. The parcularity of the narrating characteristics of these novels and theoretical origins, and profound influence of Sontag's narrating style.
