In the 1920's-1930's, before, during and after world war one and world war two, there was a kind of phenomenon in the United States of America. Some people who had made a lot of progress in literature when they were young before world war one, felt disappointed and lost because they hated the war. They felt so just because they thought the traditional values of this generation couldn't be suitable for the post-war American society, and they could not find a new one to meet with it. They also kept it in their mind that the reality was true, while it was cruel. Therefore, their life became empty and meaningless. So they just took actions according to their instincts and feelings, trying their best to betray the former ideal and values so as to express their hatred to the society by enjoying and refusing to be bound by conventions. But they didn't hit the bottom of the values completely though they were called "the lost generation". They wished to go back to their motherland though they led a wretched life far from home; they still loved their motherland though they criticized the phenomenon of sordid merchants' ways. This phenomenon from America had widespread to the whole society of Western world seldom appeared in history because it influenced so much, so deep. These writers were William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Dos Passos and Francis Scott Fitzgerald, etc. There are many reasons for the Lost Generation. Firstly, the influence of world war one, namely the big differences which the American government cheated the society before the war and the situation which the American public faced after the war. It's the main political reason for the formation of the Lost Generation, because after World war one the American economy was poor, and the public couldn't make a living by anything, the corrupt politics made the American young people feel great disappointment, especially they could not find an ideal job after they returned from war. Secondly, Austrian psychologist, Sigmund Freud's psychological theory was prevail among the Western countries, including the United States, which caused the American young people who were originally lack of mental pillar lose their aims. This influence positively affected the American youth, especially the American advanced writers, for example, the Lost Generation in 1920-1930s and the Beat Generation in 1950-1960s. Therefore , the American writers, such as William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Dos Passos and Francis Scott Fitzgerald, etc, just presented the Lost idea and phenomenon of Lost Generation through ways of literature, which supplied a rich and bare material for researchers later to study this period of American history. The research on the Lost Generation is of great realistic and long historical significance, because open China is on its way to the construction of socialism harmonious society. The values of the young are being formed and developed influentially, and the factors which influence the formation and development of the youth are good as well as bad. Therefore, how we can avoid the bad factors while we are taking the good ones is very important so that the Chinese Lost Generation will not surely appear.
