The generation of the Zen freehand brushwork paintings did not come from nowhere. It has both the exploration to the freehand brushwork paintings from the earlier literati paintings, and also the in-depth development of the Zen Spirit. The difficulty of the splash-ink paintings with simple depiction is similar to the Zen spirit that pays more attention to the mind-soul comprehension rather than speaking. It is not easy to achieve the art of Zen. The Zen freehand brushwork paintings have had profound influence on the literati paintings especially those freehand flower-and-bird paintings. The Zen of the literati paintings pursues not the scenery of the painting, but the Zen spirit. It is called'reading between the lines and implication of the rhyme.'The Zen spirit is expressed by the painting. Meanwhile, the scenery of the painting forms the Zen state, which expresses its meaning of'not aiming at the environment'and'based on the illusory'. Or uses the idea of scenery to visually interpret the Zen principles. The simple and free Zen sentiment was suitable to the taste of the Literary intelligentsia, and they expressed their feelings through the peaceful and elegant ink paintings and comprehended the principles through the scenery. The'calmness'of the paintings full of Buddha principles and Zen interests was exactly the expression of giving up desires towards materials. Wang Wei thought that:'Among all the painting arts, ink painting is superior.'Ink painting is the most succinct, elegant, unique and superior art. The black-and-white beauty of the ink painting with Zen spirit is so deep and elegant, full of the influence of the eastern calligraphy art. The fortuitousness, courage and uniqueness of the painting have shown its great effect in terms of artistic connotation and value that cannot be doubted or neglected. That is also what we say'A poem is valued in its Zen spirit, and a painting is valued in its Zen interest'.'Meaning comes before the writing or painting.'The Zen painting is famous for its essence of beyond the nature and not limited by simplicity. Meanwhile, it is very natural, ordinary and na?ve. Zhuang-zi said:'behaviour according to natural principles will solid its nature.'The Zen paintings sometimes enter the state of combining both the scenery and body, heart and activity. It looks like being carelessly and accidentally completed, just like what Tao Qian Said:'The cloud gushes out the cave unintentionally'. And Jiang Zong also said:'The cloud is heartless but they gather.'This kind of unintentionally-formed state has been the longing by the calligraphers. Su Shi Said:'A book initially has no intention to be good can actually be a good one.'Forgetting both the heart and the activity, combining both the scenery and body, will finally form a masterpiece, which enables whole-unified interest. That's what we say that some unintentional work actually intends for its necessity.
