| As is well known, reading is one of the necessary parts of English teaching and learning. It is an important means to gain information as well as one of the most important language skills. Reading comprehension is a complicated process, which is influenced so much by many factors including affective factors, such as interest and motivation. Traditional reading class puts emphasis on such external factors as reading strategies, reading modes, and reading skills, but ignores affective factors. At present, in secondary vocational schools, traditional teaching method causes students' reading incompetence, which is reflected in students' poor reading ability, inactiveness and lack of interest in reading.In order to improve reading teaching, teachers must gain new views on English teaching, change teaching methods and find a scientific way of teaching.This thesis attempts to develop a new reading teaching approach -- Pleasure Reading Teaching in accordance with the Affective Filter Hypothesis in second language acquisition, humanistic psychology and the task-based language teaching (TBLT). The paper discusses activities at pre-reading stage, while-reading stage, and post-reading stage. It also gives suggestions as to help arouse students' interest in English reading. In this thesis, there are two hypotheses, one is Pleasure Reading Teaching is more effective than traditional teaching in improving the students' reading ability, the other is Pleasure Reading Teaching can play a positive role to arouse student' interest in English reading.This thesis offers a brief explanation of the teaching principles indispensable to the teaching process of vocational English reading, such as Interest Principle, Objective Principle, Students-centre Principle, Cooperative-interactive Principle and Achievement-motivation Principle. This thesis also demonstrates the specific procedures and ways of Pleasure Reading Teaching , namely pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading activities.In order to test feasibility and effect of this teaching model, the writer experimented with the model which lasted a school term. The result of the experiment shows that Pleasure Reading Teaching can improve the quality of English teaching and students' reading ability, on the other hand, the teaching method can stimulate students' reading interest so that students learn English more actively and happily in class. |
