The English writer Jane Austen was one of the most important female novelists of the 19th century. In her works, Jane Austen unfolds the life of British middle class in the 19th century with her unique female perspective. The male characters such as Mr. Darcy, Colonel Brandon, Mr. Knight, created in her literature, though are not so well-focused as those charming female characters such as Elizabeth Bennet, Emma, Marianne, Eleanor, Annie, ect., build up Jane Austen's literature world together with those female figures. And due to their distinct personality and indispensable role they played in Jane Austen's novles, their function in the novels can not be ignored. However, critics do not pay enough attention to those characters, which leads to a failure in explaining their importance and their status in structural integrity in her works. In shaping the character, Jane Austen builds up a female world with her presice female vision. As a female writer, it would be easy to write things about women, however, as it shows in her works, she has a profound understanding of men and a deep insight into life and psychology of women through a keen grasp of the unseparable link between men and women. Men and women are relatively independent and co-existent. As a result, in her works, the images of men is necessary and irreplaceable.Besides the good appearance and morality of male characters presented in other literature works, the most prominent feature of male characters in Jane Austen's work is that these male characters would like to place themselves in equal status with those famale figures. They understand women's emotional needs and inner world. They can drop out of the shackles of their own status to pursure their true love. They are faithful, persistent, determined and ready to shoulder difficulties. All these characteristics distinguish themselves from heroes, historical figures in traditional literature works. As a female writer, Jane Austen shaped these male figures successfully. In addition, the images of"He"not only suit aesthetic needs of society but also conform with author's understanding of love and life. Tolerant and passionate, Miss Jane Austen shows a deeper concern about people and life around her. It is Jane Austen who provides women under patriarchal suppression with hope, and redefines traditional male images in her novels.
