English middle construction, which involves a complex interlay between syntax and semantics, is one of the most heatedly discussed topics in the linguistics. The traditional research on English middle construction focuses on the syntactic and the lexical basis. It is mainly centered on two topics: the derivation of English middle construction and the aspectual properties of the verb in it. But current analyses showed that no satisfactory account of English middle construction has so far been reached. It seems that the traditional method can not provide a solid explanation to the derivation of English middle construction and the special characteristics of middle verbs.Collocation was first produced by Firth (1957). The lexical meaning of any given word is achieved by multiple statement of meaning at different levels, not only at the orthographic level, phonological level, grammatical level, but also at the collocational level. This present study starts from the angle of collocation theory, hoping to shed a new light in the study of English middle constructions. There is collocation rule embedded not only in different words, but also the sentence structure. As a sentence, there also have some collocation rules that English middle constructions has to abide by.Beginning with the introduction of the importance of the present study as well as the inadequacy of previous study on English middle construction, the present thesis approach the English middle construction from the perspective of the theory of collocation. With the help of the corpus, authentic data has been obtained and analyzed concerning English middle construction. Based on the authentic data, the present paper is mainly centered on the exploration of how the middle verbs are properly used with certain adverbial, trying to find certain pattern of their collocation, both from the structural and cognitive point of view. The theory of collocation explores in detail the formation of English middle construction and its collocation. Finally, the ending remarks points out that the way of how to choose which adverbial to modify the whole English middle construction based on this principle: the adverbial is always constrained by the semantic characteristic of collocated verb and the semantic characteristic of object that subject refers to. The event and action described in English middle construction can not be separated from each other. Moreover, the event expressed in English middle construction can be regarded as a whole and the whole event can be easily triggered in human brain. It is an attempt in this thesis to explain the common linguistic issues by applying the theory of collocation. The significant of this research is that it provides the language learner with new starting-point to know formation of English middle construction. In the future, with help of abundant resource the study is hoped to go deeper and enable the argument to be fully developed.
